# How long should a YouTube Short be?

Updated: 2026-10-30

A YouTube Short can be up to 3 minutes long, square or vertical, but the right length is the shortest that delivers the whole idea. Single facts, jokes and loops usually work at 15 to 30 seconds; lists, tips and tutorials at 30 to 60; stories with a real turn at 60 to 90; only stories or explainers that keep changing earn 2 to 3 minutes. Watch where viewers leave in YouTube Studio and cut there. Over a minute, avoid copyrighted music: claimed Shorts that long are blocked.

Key facts:
- YouTube Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long and must have a square or vertical aspect ratio.
- YouTube's Shorts monetization policy says Shorts over one minute containing claimed content are blocked.
- Shorts watch time in the Shorts feed does not count toward the Partner Program's 4,000-hour threshold.
- Veedio renders 30s, 60s, 90s and 180s, so every length fits the Shorts limit.

## The limit versus the right length

Since October 2024 YouTube has accepted Shorts up to 3 minutes long, as long as the video is square or vertical. Before that the cap was 60 seconds, which is why so much advice still says 'under a minute'. The limit tells you what YouTube will classify as a Short; it says nothing about what viewers will sit through.

On the Shorts feed, every second is a choice to keep watching. A Short that delivers its idea in 25 seconds and then pads to 50 loses people in the padding, and a Short that rushes a real story into 20 seconds loses them in the confusion. So the question is not 'what length performs best' in general, but 'how long does this particular idea take to land'. The answer changes by format.

## Starting lengths by Short format

Starting points, not rules. Your own retention graph overrides this table.

| Format | Start at | Why | Veedio length |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| One surprising fact, a joke, a visual loop | 15–30s | The payoff is a single beat; rewatches matter more than duration | 30s |
| Tips, myths, quick how-to | 30–45s | Three or four beats, each a reason to stay | 30s |
| Top 5 or ranking | 45–60s | Viewers stay for the top spot; each entry needs a few seconds | 60s |
| Storytime or POV | 45–90s | Setup, escalation and ending need room | 60s or 90s |
| Mini-explainer or history | 60–90s | One question answered properly | 90s |
| Multi-turn story, deep explainer | 2–3 min | Only if something new happens every few seconds | 180s |

## Signs your Short is the wrong length

- The retention graph drops sharply at the same point in several Shorts: whatever happens there (a slow intro, a recap, a sign-off) is the part to cut.
- Many viewers swipe away in the first seconds: the length is not the problem yet; the hook is.
- Comments ask 'what happened next?' or 'part 2?': the story may need more room, or a deliberate two-part split.
- Long Shorts get fewer views than your short ones on the same topic: test the same idea at two lengths before deciding.
- You added a 'like and subscribe' ending: that is almost always the first thing to remove.

## Trim a Short to the right length

1. **Write the payoff first** — Write the last line before anything else. Everything in the Short exists to get the viewer to that line.
2. **Cut the setup to one sentence** — Most scripts spend their first scene explaining. Replace it with the most interesting line and let context arrive later.
3. **One idea per scene** — If a scene carries two ideas, split it or drop one. If it carries none, delete it.
4. **Read it aloud with a timer** — Your spoken pace is the real length. If the read runs long for the format, cut words, not pauses.
5. **Check the music rule over a minute** — If the Short runs past 60 seconds, do not use music that could get a Content ID claim; YouTube blocks claimed Shorts of that length. Use an original or generated music bed instead.
6. **Test, then trust your data** — Post the same idea at two lengths a week apart and compare how many viewers chose to watch and how far they got, in YouTube Studio's Shorts analytics.

## Setting length in Veedio

In Veedio you pick 30s, 60s, 90s or 180s before generating, and the script is written to that length; a longer video has more scenes and costs more credits, and you see the price first. Every Veedio length is inside YouTube's 3-minute Shorts limit and the video is 9:16 by default, so it is classified as a Short when you publish it to YouTube from the app. Veedio's AI score option composes an original instrumental bed for each video, which is worth choosing once a Short runs past a minute.

## FAQ

### Can YouTube Shorts be longer than 60 seconds?

Yes. YouTube accepts Shorts up to 3 minutes long with a square or vertical aspect ratio. Anything longer, or horizontal, is uploaded as a regular video.

### Do longer Shorts earn more?

Shorts revenue is shared by engaged views, not by minutes watched, so length alone does not raise earnings. A longer Short that people abandon can do worse than a short one they finish.

### Do Shorts count toward the 4,000 watch hours?

No. YouTube says watch hours from Shorts in the Shorts feed do not count toward the 4,000-hour threshold. Shorts have their own route: 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.

### Is 15 seconds too short for a Short?

Not if the idea is one beat: a fact, a reveal, a loop. Short, rewatchable Shorts can be very effective. Stories and lists usually need more.

### What happens if my Short is 3 minutes and 5 seconds?

It is no longer a Short. YouTube treats uploads over 3 minutes as regular videos. Trim to under the limit.

### Should I make Shorts and long videos the same length on every platform?

One vertical file can work on Shorts, TikTok and Reels, but each platform has its own limits and incentives. Check the TikTok and Reels guidance before cross-posting a long Short.
