Good sci-fi prompts decide how far in the future the scene is, then show technology through wear and everyday use: scuffed ship panels, a delivery drone with a dented rotor, a robot with a hand-painted name. Name the subject, the one futuristic detail, the setting, a motivated light source, the mood and the camera. Generic neon cities are what models produce by default, so steer away from them on purpose. Here are 27 original prompts by distance into the future.

Key facts:
- Veedio's Cinematic style suits realistic sci-fi; Retro suits retro-futurism; 3D render suits friendly robots.
- Veedio's music beds include Cinematic and AI score.
- River (relaxed, neutral, informative) and Daniel (steady broadcaster) are Veedio voices that suit sci-fi logs and transmissions.
- A 60-second sci-fi short with eight scenes costs 19 credits with stills or 107 with AI motion on every scene on Veedio.

## Pick your distance into the future first

Ten years ahead, the world looks mostly like today with a few new objects: folding phones, delivery drones, solar roof tiles, a self-driving bus. Fifty years ahead, cities change shape and climate shows in the architecture. Five hundred years ahead, anything goes, and the risk is that 'anything' becomes the same glowing blue hologram every model reaches for. Saying which one you mean in the prompt, even as 'near-future, about ten years from now', changes the whole frame.

Technology should look used. Real machines have scratches, stickers, tape, mismatched replacement parts and dust in the corners. A prompt that says 'worn cargo ship cockpit, cracked screen held with tape, a child's drawing stuck to the console' gets you a lived-in future. 'Futuristic spaceship interior' gets you a white corridor with blue strips.

Light it from inside the world: the glow of a screen on a face, the orange of a re-entry burn through a porthole, the cold white of a hangar floodlight. Neon is fine if it is a choice, but say what colour and where it comes from.

## Near future (about ten years out)

- **Drone rush hour:** Wide shot from a rooftop: dozens of small delivery drones weave between apartment blocks at sunrise, one with a dented rotor wobbling behind the rest. Soft orange morning light, hazy city, quietly busy mood, cinematic realism.
- **Robot crossing guard:** Medium shot at street level: a short, boxy yellow robot holds up a stop paddle at a school crossing while children in raincoats walk past, one high-fiving it. Light morning drizzle, soft grey light, warm everyday mood.
- **Solar village:** Aerial slow push-in: a hillside village where every roof is dark solar tile and small wind turbines turn along the ridge, laundry drying in gardens. Bright midday, blue sky, calm hopeful mood, documentary realism.
- **Night bus with no driver:** Interior wide shot: an empty self-driving night bus, the driver's seat folded away, a single nurse in scrubs asleep against the window. Cool white interior light, city lights streaking outside, quiet loneliness, static camera.
- **Farm in a warehouse:** Slow tracking shot along towering vertical farm racks of lettuce under pink grow lights, a worker on a lift checking a tablet. Magenta and white light, humming calm, clean industrial mood.
- **Grandmother's AR glasses:** Close-up: an elderly woman in simple smart glasses smiles as faint translucent subtitles appear beside her grandson while he talks in another language. Warm kitchen afternoon light, touching mood, shallow depth of field.

## Ships, stations and the people who work there

- **Taped-up cockpit:** Medium shot over the pilot's shoulder: a worn cargo-ship cockpit, cracked screen held with tape, a child's drawing stuck to the console, a planet's curve filling the window. Dim amber instrument light, blue planet glow, tired calm mood.
- **Station kitchen:** Wide shot: three crew in mismatched jumpsuits eat at a small fold-out table in a space-station galley, a floating spoon drifting past, an Earth-view window behind. Soft white LED light, warm camaraderie, cinematic realism.
- **Spacewalk repair:** Close tracking shot: an astronaut in a scuffed white suit tightens a bolt on a solar panel, tether drifting, reflected sunrise sliding across the visor. Harsh direct sunlight and deep black shadow, focused tense mood.
- **Cryo wake-up:** Close-up, slow pull-back: frost melts from the glass of a sleep pod as a woman's eyes open, warning lights blinking softly around her. Cold blue light turning to warm amber, disorienting mood, shallow depth of field.
- **Hangar at shift change:** Extreme wide shot: an enormous hangar with a battered freighter on landing struts, tiny mechanics walking between its legs under hanging floodlights. Cold white light pools, steam vents, industrial scale.
- **Message from home:** Medium close-up: a young engineer in a narrow bunk watches a flickering video message from her family on a small screen, hand pressed to it. Dim cabin, screen glow on her face, homesick mood.

## Robots and artificial companions

Robots that look friendly are rounded, slow and slightly imperfect. Robots that look threatening are tall, angular and still. Pick one and write it in.

- **Gardener robot:** Medium shot: a rusty, round-headed gardening robot with one squeaky arm carefully waters a row of tomato plants, a bird perched on its shoulder. Golden late-afternoon light, overgrown garden, gentle warm mood, stylised 3D.
- **Learning to paint:** Over-the-shoulder shot: a slender white robot holds a brush awkwardly, painting a lopsided sunflower while an old artist guides its hand. Bright studio window light, tender humour, cinematic.
- **Last robot in the mall:** Wide static shot: a small cleaning robot keeps sweeping the floor of a long-abandoned shopping mall, plants growing through the skylights. Soft daylight through broken glass, lonely melancholy, cinematic.
- **Factory line awakening:** Slow dolly along a row of identical humanoid robots standing still in a dark factory; one at the end turns its head toward the camera. Cold blue standby lights, ominous mood, deep shadows.
- **Robot dog at the door:** Low eye-level shot: a robotic dog with scuffed panels and a fabric collar waits by a front door, tail antenna wagging when the handle turns. Warm hallway light, sweet mood, realistic textures.

## Alien worlds and first contact

- **Two suns:** Extreme wide shot: a lone explorer stands on a ridge of purple rock watching two suns set over a sea of tall white grass that moves like water. Double shadows, orange and teal sky, awe mood, cinematic.
- **Glowing tide:** Low wide shot at the shoreline: waves of bioluminescent green surf wash over black sand on a planet with a huge ringed moon overhead. Night, the sea as the light source, serene wonder.
- **First signal:** Medium shot in a radio observatory control room: an astronomer leans toward a screen as a repeating pattern appears, a cold cup of coffee beside her. 3 a.m., monitor glow in a dark room, held-breath tension.
- **Visitor in the field:** Wide shot: a farmer and his daughter stand at the edge of a wheat field looking at a smooth, silent, mirror-like sphere hovering above the crops. Overcast dawn, the sphere reflecting the grey sky, uneasy calm.
- **Alien market:** Tracking shot through a crowded market under fabric awnings where tall, slender beings with long fingers trade glowing fruit with human travellers. Hot dusty afternoon light, lively mood, colourful, cinematic.

## Retro-future (the future as imagined in the past)

- **Paperback cover:** Wide shot: a chrome rocket with fins stands on a red desert launch pad, two astronauts in bubble helmets walking toward it. Saturated 1970s paperback-cover colours, painted look, optimistic adventure mood.
- **Home of tomorrow:** Medium shot: a family in a 1960s-style living room with a curved white sofa and a wall-sized screen showing a moon base, a robot butler serving drinks. Warm pastel colours, film grain, cheerful nostalgia.
- **Monorail city:** Extreme wide shot: a sleek monorail glides between tall white towers with rounded tops and rooftop gardens, small flying cars in the sky. Bright afternoon, cyan sky, utopian mood, retro print texture.
- **Mission control, analogue:** Wide shot: rows of operators at chunky consoles with blinking buttons and reel-to-reel tape machines watch a large grainy screen of a lunar landing. warm tungsten light, light haze, tense excitement, 16mm film grain.
- **Ray-gun diner:** Exterior medium shot: a roadside diner shaped like a flying saucer at dusk on a desert highway, a classic finned car parked outside. Pink and turquoise sky, glowing tube lights, playful nostalgic mood, retro.

## Sci-fi prompt mistakes

- Writing 'futuristic' and nothing else. You get a generic blue-lit corridor. Name one specific technology and show it in use.
- Spotless everything. Add wear, repairs and personal objects so the future feels inhabited.
- Holograms with readable text. Generated text breaks; put interface words in captions instead.
- Unmotivated neon. If there is neon, say what is glowing and why it is that colour.
- Real space agencies' logos or real astronauts. Use invented crews, ships and mission names.

## FAQ

### How do I stop every AI sci-fi city looking the same?

Name the climate, the building material and one local detail: 'flooded coastal city, buildings on stilts, rooftop rice terraces', or 'desert city of rammed-earth towers with solar sails'. Avoid the words 'cyberpunk' and 'neon' unless that is truly what you want.

### What camera moves suit sci-fi scenes?

Slow push-ins and wide static shots for scale, close tracking shots for spacewalks and chases, and slow pull-backs to reveal a ship or a world. Keep motion slow in space; there is no wind or shake.

### Can I make sci-fi videos with famous ships or characters?

No. Invent your own ships, crews and robots. A ship with a hand-painted name and visible repairs is more memorable than a borrowed design anyway.

### How do I write a robot that viewers like?

Rounded body, slow movement, one imperfection (a squeaky arm, a dented panel), and a small kind action. Pair it with a human or an animal so it has someone to care about.

### Does space content need a disclosure label?

If AI scenes could be mistaken for real space-agency footage or real events, label them. YouTube asks for disclosure of realistic synthetic content. Obvious fiction, like an alien market, is less likely to need it.

### Should a sci-fi short be vertical or landscape?

Vertical 9:16 for Shorts and TikTok. Frame vast scenes tall: planet or ship filling the top half, a small human at the bottom. Veedio also renders 16:9 if you are making a landscape trailer.
