## The register is a set of rules, and they are worth keeping

Fairy tales are formally strict: simple past tense, things happening in threes, phrases that repeat, a bargain that has a cost. Those are not decorations; they are what makes the form memorable when it is told out loud, which is what it was for.

So the brief holds to them rather than writing a modern children’s story in a castle. The result sounds like the thing people are searching for, and it also survives being forty-five seconds long — a form built for oral retelling compresses very well.

## Frightening lightly

The old versions of these stories are much darker than the versions people remember, and a video that reproduces the original ending will surprise a parent who put it on for a four-year-old.

This preset frightens lightly and resolves properly. If you want the Grimm ending, ask for it in the box — but the default is written for the audience that actually watches fairy tales on a phone, which is a child with a parent nearby.

## FAQ

### Is it suitable for young children?

The default is written to be: light frights, a proper resolution, plain language. The old versions of many of these tales are much darker, and if you want that ending you have to ask for it.

### Will the characters look the same in every scene?

No. Every frame is generated independently, so a character’s design drifts between scenes. Tales built around places, animals and objects hold together better than ones built around a face.

### How is this different from the kids-story preset?

This one holds to the fairy-tale form — threes, a bargain, a cost — and will retell classics. Kids-story writes original gentle stories with no particular formal shape.

### Can it retell a copyrighted story?

Traditional tales are fine. A modern published story is somebody’s work, and it should not be retold here — ask for an original in the same register instead.
