## A degraded look needs a slower script

The VHS aesthetic is soft, low-contrast and busy with noise. A punchy script fights it: fast cuts over grain read as a mistake rather than a style, and small captions disappear entirely.

So this preset slows everything down — fewer words per scene, a lo-fi bed instead of a punchy one, and bold captions that survive a low-contrast frame. It is the same style suffix as the retro page and almost the opposite video.

## What the look is doing psychologically

Tape artefacts are a shorthand for memory. Bloom, colour shift and grain tell a viewer that what they are watching is old before a single word is spoken, which is why the aesthetic is used so heavily for anything about the past.

That is worth using deliberately. Over a script about your childhood it is atmosphere; over a script about a current product it is a costume, and the audience reads it as one.

## The honest limits of the effect

The look comes from the image prompt, not from a post-processing chain. There is no scan-line overlay, no tracking-error effect, no timestamp burn-in and no tape wobble — those would be renderer features and we have not built them.

What you get is a still frame generated to look like it was shot on tape, with a slow move on it. That reads convincingly on a phone and would not survive being played on a television, which is a fair description of the whole aesthetic anyway.

### Are there scan lines and tracking errors?

No. The look comes from the image prompt, not a post-processing chain — there is no overlay, no tape wobble and no timestamp burn-in. It reads as tape on a phone and would not fool a television.

### How is this different from the retro preset?

Same style suffix, opposite video. Retro is neon and punchy with highlight captions; this is soft and slow with a lo-fi bed. The brief, voice, music and captions all differ.

### Can I add a date stamp in the corner?

Not as a render feature. You can ask for one in the image prompt and the model will invent something that looks like one, with unreliable digits.

### Why bold captions on a soft look?

Because a low-contrast grainy frame swallows small text. Bold survives it. Subtle and highlight are both available if you prefer them.

### What length works best?

Five or six scenes, thirty-five to fifty seconds. The mood does not survive being stretched, and the pipeline caps at sixty seconds regardless.
