How should an online store use short video to sell products?

Online stores get the most from three repeatable short videos per product: a demo that shows the problem it solves and how it works, a sale or launch announcement with exact terms and dates, and an unboxing-style video showing what arrives. Make them 15 to 45 seconds, vertical, captioned for sound-off viewing, and keep every claim, price and review real: discounts must compare with a genuine former price, and testimonials must come from real customers.

  • Under the FTC's pricing guides, a former-price comparison is legitimate only if that price was offered openly and actively, in good faith, for a reasonably substantial period (16 CFR 233.1).
  • The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, in effect since October 21, 2024, bars fake reviews and testimonials, including from people who never used the product.
  • The FTC requires a reasonable basis for any shipping-time claim; with no claim, sellers must expect to ship within 30 days (Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule).
  • In the EU, a price-reduction announcement must show the prior price as the lowest price applied in at least the 30 days before the reduction (Directive 98/6/EC, Article 6a).
  • Veedio's ecommerce preset defaults to the Sarah voice, Pop captions, an uplifting bed and the Cinematic style in 9:16; one product photo of your own can open the video.

What short video does for an online store

In a physical shop, people pick a product up, turn it over and imagine using it. Online, short video does that job. The best product videos are not ads in the old sense; they answer the questions a shopper would ask a sales assistant: what is it for, how does it work, how big is it, what comes in the box, and is it worth the price.

For a store with a catalogue of dozens or hundreds of products, the question is scale. Filming every product is out of reach for most small teams, so stores mix two kinds of video. Their own footage or photos for anything a shopper inspects before buying, such as the product page video, the hero product and the unboxing. And narrated, script-driven videos for social posts about the problem a product solves, a sale, a gift guide or a launch, where the point is to send people to the product page.

Be precise about which is which. A generated scene shows a product like yours in use, not the item that will arrive in the box. That is fine for a TikTok or Reel that sends traffic to the product page; it is not what belongs on the product page itself, where the shopper is inspecting the actual thing.

Before you post: Generated scenes show a product like yours, not your item. Open each video on one of your own product photos, keep generated scenes to lifestyle and use-case shots, and do not use a generated video as the product-page video where shoppers inspect what they will receive. Label realistic AI content on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, and on TikTok Shop follow its own content rules.

FAQ

Questions people ask next

What types of video should an online store make first?

A product demo for your best-selling product, then an unboxing-style video for the same product, then a sale announcement when you next run a promotion. One product done well teaches you the template for the rest of the catalogue.

Can I use AI product videos on my product page or Amazon listing?

Not ones made on Veedio, because the scenes are generated rather than footage of your actual item. The product page is where shoppers inspect what will arrive; use your own footage there. Use generated videos for the social posts that send people to the page.

Is it legal to show a crossed-out price in a sale video?

Yes, if the crossed-out price is genuine: one you actually offered openly for a substantial period (the FTC's 16 CFR 233.1). In the EU, it must be the lowest price you charged in the 30 days before the reduction. A price raised just before a sale to make the discount look bigger is the classic violation.

Can I use an AI avatar to 'review' my product?

The FTC's Q&A on its reviews rule says there is no blanket ban on AI avatars in marketing, but a testimonial is prohibited if it is fake or false. Do not present an avatar as a real customer or describe experiences no customer reported. Disclose that it is AI-generated.

How many product videos does a store need?

Aim for at least one demo per product you actively promote, refreshed with a new angle every few weeks for best-sellers. Volume matters less than having a video live for every product you push in ads or email.

What does it cost to make product videos on Veedio?

Every full video needs a paid plan: Starter $19/mo with 600 credits, Pro $49/mo, Studio $149/mo, with a 7-day money-back guarantee on the first payment. A five-scene video in stills costs 13 credits; with AI motion, 68. UGC-style ads with an AI creator are on Pro and Studio. With a free account and no card you can make a 4-second watermarked preview.
