A hook is a mechanic, not a sentence

There are maybe six things an opening line can do: ask a question the viewer answers in their head, make a claim they want to argue with, open a gap they need closed, put them inside a situation, lead with a number, or contradict something they believe.

Most people write the same one every time, usually a question, and their videos all open identically. This returns ten lines built on different levers on purpose, so you can hear which mechanic your subject actually suits rather than defaulting to the one you always use.

Why ten, and why they are disposable

The useful output of a hook session is not a hook, it is a shortlist you can be ruthless with. Ten arrive at once so that deleting eight feels like editing rather than failing.

No, and any tool claiming that about generated text is overstating it. These come from a language model’s sense of what an opening line does. For openings attached to real numbers, the trending pages on this site rank actual YouTube Shorts by views per day and show the titles that are working.

What do the different mechanics mean?

Question, claim, curiosity gap, POV, number and contradiction. Each pulls on a different reason to keep watching, and the point of getting ten is hearing which one your subject suits.
