Horror story video prompts for AI generators
Horror prompts work when they describe what is almost seen rather than what is shown: a door open a few centimetres, a figure too far away to make out, a light that should not be on. Name the ordinary place, the one wrong detail, a single motivated light source, a slow or static camera and the mood. Gore and explicit monsters are often blocked and rarely scary. Here are 26 original prompts in five groups.
- Veedio's Cinematic and Documentary styles suit realistic horror; Retro gives an old-footage look.
- Voices that suit horror narration on Veedio include Brian (deep, resonant) and Lily (velvety, cinematic).
- Veedio's music beds include AI score and Cinematic.
- A ten-scene horror story is 23 credits on Veedio with stills or 133 with AI motion on every scene.
How horror prompts differ from every other kind
Most prompts try to show the subject clearly. Horror prompts do the opposite: they hide it. The scariest frame in a short horror story is usually an empty room with one thing slightly off, held a beat too long. So the subject of a horror prompt is often a place, and the action is something small: a chair that has moved, a light switching on in an upstairs window, a shape standing at the end of a corridor that does not move when the camera does.
Light is the second tool. 'Dark' alone gives you an underexposed mush that looks like nothing on a phone screen. Name the one source instead: a single bare bulb, a fridge door's glow, a phone torch, a red exit sign, moonlight through blinds. That keeps the frame readable while leaving most of it in shadow. The camera should be slow or locked off. Horror lives in static wides and very slow push-ins; shaky movement reads as action, not dread.
What fails: gore, which most generators refuse and platforms limit; detailed monster close-ups, which look like costumes; and real tragedies or real people, which you should not dramatise as fiction. Keep the threat implied and the narration doing the explicit work.
The ordinary home, slightly wrong
Two toothbrushes
Static close-up: a bathroom cup holding two toothbrushes in a flat where one person lives, the second one still wet. Cold fluorescent light, small mirror cabinet half open, quiet unease, cinematic realism, shallow depth of field.
Use this promptFridge light at 3 a.m.
Wide static shot from the hallway: a dark kitchen lit only by an open fridge, the door slowly swinging wider on its own. Night, cold white fridge glow, everything else in shadow, creeping dread, slow push-in.
Use this promptThe extra chair
High wide shot of a dining table set for three, with a fourth chair pulled out and turned to face the wall. Grey dawn light through net curtains, dust in the air, eerie stillness, locked-off camera.
Use this promptBaby monitor
Close-up on a baby monitor screen on a nightstand showing an empty cot, a soft shape just at the edge of the frame. Dark bedroom, green screen glow on a sleeping parent's face, rising tension, slow push-in to the screen.
Use this promptFootprints inside
Low tracking shot at floor level: wet footprints lead from the front door across a polished hallway floor and up the stairs, but the door is still locked and chained. Rainy night, streetlight through frosted glass, cold dread.
Use this promptMirror lag
Medium shot over a woman's shoulder into a bathroom mirror: she reaches to turn off the tap and her reflection's hand is a fraction slower. Single warm bulb above the mirror, steam on the glass edges, uncanny mood, static camera.

Empty and liminal places
Places that are normally full feel wrong when empty. These work as stills with a slow pan, which suits narrated stories.
Supermarket after close
Extreme wide shot down a long supermarket aisle at night, half the ceiling lights off, one trolley parked in the middle facing the camera. Flickering fluorescent light, hum implied, lonely unease, slow dolly forward.
Use this promptIndoor pool
Wide static shot of an empty tiled indoor swimming pool, water perfectly still, a single pair of footprints drying on the tiles. Turquoise underwater lights, the rest dim, dreamlike dread, cinematic symmetry.
Use this promptMotel corridor
Long corridor shot, slow push-in: an outdoor motel walkway, every door closed except one at the far end standing open with no light inside. Night, buzzing yellow lamps, wet concrete, suspense.
Use this promptSchool stairwell
Low angle looking up a spiral school stairwell, a hand resting on the rail several floors above, no person visible. Late evening, grey window light fading, emergency light glow, quiet menace.
Use this promptFog on the motorway
Driver's point of view through a windscreen: thick fog on an empty motorway at night, headlights catching a figure standing perfectly still on the hard shoulder. Cold headlight glare, red dashboard glow, tense mood, slow approach.
Use this promptAbandoned fairground
Wide shot, slow pan: an overgrown fairground with a carousel that has one light still on, a single horse slowly turning. Overcast dusk, faded colours, melancholy dread, retro film grain.
Use this prompt
Camera as witness (found footage and recordings)
Prompts written as if from a doorbell camera, trail camera or old camcorder feel real because they borrow how we usually see unexplained things. Keep text overlays out of the image and add timestamps as captions.
Doorbell camera
Fixed fisheye doorbell-camera view of a front porch at night: a tall figure stands just outside the porch light's circle, not approaching. Black-and-white night vision, slight lens distortion, motionless tension.
Use this promptTrail camera
Static trail-camera still in a pine forest at night: infrared glow on the trunks, a pale shape crouched between trees, eyes reflecting the flash. Grainy monochrome, washed highlights, unsettling mood.
Use this promptOld camcorder birthday
Handheld camcorder footage of a children's birthday party in a 1990s living room, everyone singing, one unfamiliar adult standing still in the doorway behind them. Warm tungsten light, VHS colour bleed, wrongness under cheer, retro grain.
Use this promptCare-home corridor
Wall-mounted security-camera angle down a care-home corridor at night, a wheelchair slowly rolling across the frame by itself. Green-tinted low light, scan-line texture, cold dread, static frame.
Use this promptPhone torch in the attic
First-person phone-camera view climbing into an attic, the torch beam sweeping over boxes, a child's rocking horse rocking gently. Pitch dark except the torch circle, dust floating, breathless tension, slight handheld wobble.

Creatures kept half-hidden
Under the bed
Floor-level shot under a child's bed looking out toward the bedroom door, a long pale hand resting flat on the carpet in the foreground, out of focus. Night-light glow, deep shadows, primal fear, very slow push-in.
Use this promptLake at dusk
Wide shot of a still lake at dusk, a wooden jetty in the foreground, a smooth dark shape breaking the surface far out and sinking again. Fading purple light, mist on the water, ominous calm, locked-off camera.
Use this promptToo-tall neighbour
Wide shot through a kitchen window: a figure in the next garden standing behind a high fence, its head and shoulders visible above it, facing the house. Grey overcast afternoon, flat light, unnerving stillness, slow zoom in.
Use this promptScarecrow turned
Wide shot from a farmhouse porch: a scarecrow in a cornfield, its head turned toward the house while every crow has gone silent. Sunset turning to dusk, orange sky, dread, cinematic wide.
Use this promptSomething in the snow
Extreme wide shot of a snowed-in cabin at night, its lit window the only warmth, a line of deep footprints circling the cabin twice. Blue moonlight, falling snow, isolation and threat, slow aerial push-in.

Folk and rural horror
Village procession
Wide shot from a hillside: villagers in pale woven masks walk in a silent line toward a bonfire in a field, one child turning to look at the camera. Twilight, firelight glow, ritual dread, painterly cinematic grade.
Use this promptWishing well
Top-down shot into an old stone well, the water far below reflecting a face that is not the one looking in. Midday sun overhead, moss on stones, quiet horror, static frame.
Use this promptBell in the woods
Medium shot in a birch forest: a rusted bell hangs from a branch on a rope, swinging slightly with no wind, ribbons tied to every tree around it. Pale overcast light, cold stillness, folk-tale menace.
Use this promptThe last bus stop
Wide static shot: a rural bus shelter beside an empty country road at night, a single passenger seated in it with their back to the road, a bus approaching with no driver visible. Headlight glow, mist, deep dread.

Before you post: Horror is not kids content, even in a cartoon style. Do not mark it made for kids. If a scene looks realistic enough that viewers could take it for real footage, YouTube and TikTok ask you to disclose that it is AI-generated or synthetic.
FAQ
Questions people ask next
Why do my AI horror scenes come out too dark?
The prompt said 'dark' without a light source. Name one: a bare bulb, a fridge glow, a phone torch, moonlight through blinds. The model then lights that part and leaves the rest in shadow, which stays readable on a phone.
Can AI generate gore or violent horror?
Most generators block it, and platforms restrict graphic content. It is also rarely what makes a short scary. Imply the threat in the picture and let the narration describe it.
How many scenes does a horror short need?
A 60-second story usually needs six to eight scenes: an ordinary opening, two or three escalating wrong details, the reveal and a last unsettling frame. Eight scenes on Veedio cost 19 credits with stills or 107 with motion.
Should horror scenes use AI motion?
Sparingly. A slow push-in on a still is often creepier than movement. Use motion on the one scene where something moves: the door swinging, the shape sinking, the carousel horse turning.
Which voice suits horror narration?
A calm, low voice reads scarier than a dramatic one. On Veedio, Brian is deep and resonant, Lily is velvety and cinematic, and Daniel gives a steady broadcaster read for 'case file' formats.
Can I base a horror video on a real crime or real place?
Be careful. Dramatising real victims or naming real people as part of fiction is unfair to them and can break platform rules. Invent the place and the people, or keep factual cases in a clearly factual, respectful format.
Do I have to label AI horror videos?
If the scenes are realistic enough to pass as real footage, yes: YouTube requires disclosure of realistic altered or synthetic content and TikTok asks for AI-generated content labels. Clearly stylised cartoon or comic horror is less likely to need it, but labelling is the safe choice.
