Transcript

A tiny seed, no bigger than a grain of rice, knows exactly which way to send its roots down and its shoot up, even in complete darkness.

Inside the seed are specialized cells filled with dense starch grains. These statoliths settle to the lowest point, telling the seed which way is down.

This internal compass triggers growth hormones to push the root downwards, seeking water, and the shoot upwards towards the light, with incredible precision.
